Our year 8 history students had a wonderful time visiting the Beamish Museum in Durham to gain an understanding of what life was like in the 1800s and early 1900s. They had a fantastic time re-enacting a march for the right for women to vote in 1910, and a counter march by those who did not want women to vote. Students dressed up in clothing from the time and prepared speeches about why women should and should not vote, looking at both sides of the argument. Students also took part in a WWI recruitment march where they got to sign up to fight in WWI and learn how to be soldiers. There was also the opportunity to see what it was like going to school in the 1950s, visit a farm to see the shire horses, lambs, and the turkeys that caused huge fascination. Students could also buy sweets from an old sweet shop, visit the coal mine, and walk down a 1900s high street. The visit ended with the Victorian funfair, with students being able to take part in entertainment from the 1800s and early 1900s. A great day was had by all.
